Spindrift Ranger Sport Fish yacht sleeps 4 people comfortably

Spindrift Yachts has produced a variety of boats in an unusual manner: The company builds them to buyers specifications. Exteriors are the same in each, but the location and dimensions of saloons, galleys, heads and cabins are determined by the owner.
Now, however, Spindrift has added a new line of production boats called the Ranger Series, consisting of a 35 foot, a 43 foot, and a 47 foot boat. All are available in either a sun deck model, with aft cabin, or a convertible model.
And while Spindrift will gladly build a custom cabinet for your favorite stereo system, the general layout of each Ranger follows a standard plan. Bulkheads are not moved.
The Rangers are being built through a joint venture between Spindrift and Australias Range marine. The basic hull design is by Australian naval architect Marino Gomes, with contributions from Spindrift.
While the 35 foot version is built near Sydney, Australia, the 43 and 47-footers are being produced by spindrift in Taiwan. But David Johnson, Spindrifts production manager, said that the Taiwanese workmanship is of higher caliber and demand. We maintain our high quality workmanship by demanding high standards and employing a general manager who lives in Taiwan and supervises the building of each boat, he said. A thorough inspection of the Ranger seems to back up his claims.
Our test boat was the spindrift Ranger 47 Convertible â designated a convertible rather than a sportfisher only because the cockpit is a bit smaller than is found on a true sportfisher of this size.
Nevertheless, the Ranger makes a comfortable fishing platform. Visibility form the flying bridge helm is unobscured form the bow pulpit to the transom, and the transom door and the engine controls in the cockpit can be invaluable after a hookup.
The engine room access is a hatch in the saloon cabin sole, just inside the aft door. The standard engines are twin 375 hp Caterpillar diesels, but our boat had two Johnson and Tower-6-71 TIs squeezed into the same limited area. This addition gives the boat another eight knots, for a top speed of about 31 knots.
The engine compartment is crowded but access for maintenance can be made by opening additional hatches. And all the equipment is installed neatly with color coded plumbing and wiring. Lead-foam is used for soundproofing.
In the saloon, teak is used abundantly for a warm, traditional look. Holly is used for accent strips in the teak cabin sole and seems almost too nice to cover with carpet.
Another plus: Spindrift has bucked the current trend in sportfisher design to provide forward-facing ports in the Ranger. Their philosophy is that saloons can be light and airy, and structurally sound.
The well-equipped galley is down four steps and forward of the saloon. Standing features include a 10 cubic foot refrigerator, a choice of propane or electric range, a full sized stainless steel double sink, and a convection/microwave oven.
The dinette, which can easily seat six, is directly across from the galley, and both are beneath the large glass forward ports. The angle of the ports creates a skylight effect, giving the whole area openness not found on many boats.
Off the companionway leading forward is the guest cabin, with unusually spacious over-and-under bunks. The guest head is across the companionway and shares a separate shower with the owners head. In the main stateroom, the large double berth is surrounded by enough teak cabinets and lockers for a season worth of clothes. A red safety light is built into the base of each berth as one of several such lights located throughout the boat to help maintain night vision.
Up on the flying bridge, the center-mounted console contains full instrumentation, including a depth sounded and VHF radio. Adequate provisions for additional electronics, such as rada

Anyone who has tried to walk on a lurching boat will appreciate the Rangerâ s many stainless steel handrails. From the heavy-duty life rail to the flying bridge grip rails, Spindrift has designed this vessel for safety.
But what about performance? As we made our way out of the harbor for a test run, the sea was smooth, with long, low swells. At 5 mph, the boat tracked well, with no wandering.
We inched the Morse throttles forward and easily brought the Ranger up on its plane. With the standard engines, an honest cruising speed of 18 to 20 knots can be expected, with a top end of 23.
The research for the Rangerâ s hull design was done at the Netherland Ship Model Basin in Holland â the same lab that developed Australia IIâ s famed winged keel for the 1983 Americaâ s Cup. The result is a V-bottom hull with wide lifting strakes and chines that angle down five degrees. Spindrift feels this gives the boat a hull that lifts quickly with low horsepower.
Structurally, the hull is molded with solid, laminated fiberglass, with foam core stringers and thwarts to provide rigidity. The superstructure is constructed with a foam core sandwich for stiffness and strength.
The Rangerâ s ride is smooth and dry, with only minimal pitching and rolling. Along with the hull design, its 35,000 pound displacement is no doubt responsible. Looking out from the flying bridge across 20 feet of foredeck, you know youâ re on a big boat.
A list of the standard features provided by Spindrift fills two typewritten pages. Just about every piece of equipment needed for safe boating is included in the â base price of $285,000.
Some of the more surprising inclusions are dock lines and fenders, an emergency tiller, and even a flare gun. Just fill the tanks and youâ re ready to go.
In the past, Spindrift has produced only about 35 to 40 boats per year due to the custom construction. But with the new Ranger Series being built as production boats, the Spindrift logo may soon become a common sight along the coast.
