Watch Our Video The sharp bow entry, hard chines, and bow flare on the Grady-White Freedom 215 combine to provide a comfortable, dry ride. The hard chine and running strakes come all the way to the stem. Note the way they work to keep spray out and downward. Mission
Today, many manufacturers are recognizing that offshore and inshore fish boats serve families that do more than fish. These boat builders have been introducing dual console layouts to their model line-ups. Grady-White has always offered family-friendly models designed for the rugged North Carolina offshore waters, and the Freedom 215 is no exception.
Designed with a sharp bow entry with a wide bow flare forward, the aggressive running strakes and hard chines are taken all the way to the stem. Add a 19-degree deadrise at the transom, and the Grady-White Freedom 215 performs gracefully with a solid, smooth, and dry ride in most sea conditions.
With standard and optional fishing features that would satisfy the most avid of anglers, Grady-White did not forget the comfort and sporty features that families enjoy when they are not engaged in fishing.Major Features

The Grady-White Freedom 215 has an LOA of 23’6” with swim platforms (7.16 m), a beam of 8’6” (2.59 m), and she draws 16” (40.6 cm) of water with her outboard up. She has a SeaV2 Hull designed by Ray Hunt and Associates and has a 19-degree deadrise at the transom. Our test boat was powered by a Yamaha F200 engine turning 14-1/2 x 15 Reliance SDS props.
In our test on smooth water on an 80-degree day, we recorded an average top speed of 42.1 mph at 5800 rpm. The best cruise came at 3500 rpm where we travelled at 22.6 mph, burning 5.5 gph for 4.1 miles per gallon, giving us a range of 298 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve.
When conditions permit, most people will probably want to go a bit faster, and at 4000 rpm she went 27.1 mph, burning 7.1 gph, getting 3.8 mpg for a range of 274 statute miles with a 10% reserve.Acceleration Times and Test Conditions
Time to Plane: 4.2 sec.
0 to 20: 5.7 sec.
0 to 30: 8.9 sec.
Prop: 14-1/2 x 15 Reliance SDS
Load: 2 persons, 60% fuel capacity, no water, 228 lbs. (103.4 kg) of gear
Conditions: 80 degrees, light wind (5 mph), light chopHandling The deep variable deadrise of the SeaV2 hull and reversed chines provides a smooth, dry ride and better overall performance. The bottom design and resulting ride is one of the most important attributes of this boat.
Because of our smooth water conditions, it was difficult to really test the hull, but when jumping the photo boat’s wake, we found her entry to always be soft and sure-footed. Her SeaV2 hull has a variable deadrise bottom which is sharp at the bow to easily cut through waves, and then melds into the 19-degree deadrise at the transom for stability, efficiency, and speed.Boat Inspection Bow
The bow of the Freedom 215 offers traditional forward seating that is well executed. The bow features deep lounge seating and bow bolsters standard. They are firm and plush. They should prove to be comfortable for a full day of boating.
The lounge seating measures 44” (111.8 cm) from console backrest to bow and 23” (58.4 cm) across. The footwell is 22” (55.9 cm) deep from the top of the seat cushion.Shown here with the optional Sun Platform insert. The low-profile grab rail provides safety without interfering with fishing activities. Note the standard speakers (2 in the bow), stainless-steel cup holders, and 7” pop-up cleats (2 bow cleats, 2 mid-ships, 2 in the aft cockpit port and starboard). Port and starboard insulated storage can double as fish boxes or coolers with overboard drains. With the cushions in place, the lids would not stay open without holding them. Gas-assist struts would add the convenience of hands-free stowing. The anchor locker has a latch to keep the lid from opening while underway and deep drain gutters to keep water out of the locker. The test boat had the optional fresh water tank with the fill located in the forward inboard side of the starboard console. Walkthrough Windshield The walkthrough windshield allows for a 24” (61 cm) egress to the bow seating. The windshield is tempered glass, and comes with a canvas flap that snaps into place, creating a full windbreak when the windshield is closed. Port Side Console Shown is the port side console which has a lockable head door. Built-in to the console is a cup holder, speaker, and the standard stereo with AM/FM tuner, MP3 auxiliary connections, Bluetooth® connectivity, and remote control. Note the well-placed handrail along the companion seat and on the top of the console. There is a vent fixture on top of the console that provides ventilation for the head as well as a recessed tray that is self-draining to hold incidentals. Standard Head Inside the console is the head with 43” (109.2 cm) of headroom and is 28” (71.1 cm) across and 46” (116.8 cm) deep. The head comes standard with in-direct lighting, a Porta-Potti, mirror (inside of the door), storage, and composite Cherry and Holly sole. Helm Console The helm console is well laid-out with controls logically placed and easy to access. The helm console has plenty of space in the dash for a good-sized multifunction display and VHF radio. Grady-White does not offer standard or optional electronics on the Freedom 215, but Grady-White dealers are happy to install them in the aftermarket. The hydraulic steering and tilt wheel are standard features on the Freedom 215. The 316-grade steering wheel comes with a knob standard. The compass is strategically situated in-line with the steering wheel. The Yamaha LCD Display is standard along with the switch panel, 12V outlet, and 5V duplex USB port. Note the horn switch is red for easy identification. The cup holder and ignition switch are standard; the trim tabs are an option from Grady-White. The test boat’s trim tab controls are well placed at the top of the throttle throw. Grady-White includes a lockable storage drawer for incidentals. Note the well-placed fire extinguisher built into the inboard side of the console -- easy to reach but out of the way. Inside the starboard helm console is storage with 39” (99.1 cm) from bottom to the top and is 36” (91.4 cm) deep. Grady-White includes storage for the optional bow filler pad and two Plano-style tackle box trays. Helm Seat The Pompanette-style helm seat has deep, comfortable cushions and fixed arm rests. The helm seat can be raised and lowered, slides and locks forward and back, and rotates with a lock. Companion Seat The multi-position companion seating on the test boat is optional. The Freedom 215 comes standard with a companion seat that matches the helm seat or a sleeper seat option can be equipped at no cost. The optional multi-position port side seating adjusts to create a lounge seat that is 38” (96.5 cm) long and 24” (61 cm) wide. Shown is the seat in a forward-facing lounge position. Shown here is the optional portside seating in the aft-facing lounge position. The backrest can be adjusted to any position along the seat and tilts to fit the position desired. By adjusting the backrest in the most forward position, the seat forms a leaning post. Cockpit The cockpit is well set-up for both cruising and fishing. It measures 83” (210.8 cm) from the aft forward to the consoles and 78” (198.1 cm) wide. The coaming bolsters shown are optional.
The cockpit mid-way is 25” (63.5 cm) deep from the deck to the top of the coaming and has 28” (71.1 cm) of freeboard on the outside. Further forward, the freeboard increases to 36” (91.4 cm) and at the forward seating the freeboard is 37” (94 cm).The Freedom 215 comes standard with an insulated, 64-quart cooler built into the area between the two aft seats with a 20.5” (52.1 cm) wide by 12” (30.5 cm) deep cutting board, two cup holders, built-in grab rails, and space for the optional pop-up tow pylon. The aft seat cushion which measures 16” (40.6 cm) deep by 22” (55.9 cm) wide, can be flipped over and placed facedown into the base to form a platform. The seatback lifts and rotates to the inboard position to provide egress to the swim platform and the four-step boarding ladder.
ABYC standards call for all boats to have a re-boarding ladder that can be reached by someone in the water. It is also to reach 22” (55.9 cm) below the waterline, as this standard ladder clearly does. This feature makes it so that the boat is able to be used for towing sports. The test boat came with the optional 16-gallon raw water livewell with light. The livewell is insulated and can be used as a cooler as well. Note the gas-assist strut that allows the angler to use both hands when retrieving bait. Note the raw water washdown hose under the coaming. The test boat came with this option installed. Under the gunnel is standard rod storage and a fixed toe rail for fighting fish. Shown here is the optional freshwater shower wand which is well positioned near the boarding platform. A removable storage box is inside each of the two aft seats Under the starboard side, removable storage box is the battery access. The battery switch is recessed into the starboard side aft seat for easy access. The optional tow pylon pops up and is great for families that enjoy tow-sports. The all-round navigation light receptacle is placed on the port side aft gunnel. Transom The dual swim platforms are 28” (71.1 cm) deep by 25” (63.5 cm) wide. The starboard side houses the four-step boarding ladder in a recessed cutout. The test boat came with the optional engine flush system. The hose attachment is on the outboard side of the transom. The self-draining outboard engine well keeps the outboard rigging underfoot and easily accessible. Options to Consider
- Boat covers
- Cockpit bolsters
- Cockpit freshwater shower with 10-gallon tanks and filler port
- Engine flush system
- 16-gallon livewell
- Portside lounge seat with storage drawer
- Forward Sun Platform insert
- Raw water washdown system with hose
Prices vary, as each dealer can set its own prices. However, every dealer pays the same price to the factory for each boat no matter what the dealer’s volume. This helps small dealers stay competitive with large ones, and also means that on the used boat market there will not be give-away deals that lower prices for an entire model. Grady-White was one of the first builders to institute such a policy and it is one of the reasons the boats have such a good reputation.Observations
The Grady-White Freedom 215 continues the legacy of Grady-White’s reputation for solid, well-thought-out boat design, intelligent engineering, and attention to detail. Every inch of the Freedom 215 shows that Grady-White understands its customers and how they use their boats.
Families that love to fish but still like to use their boat for everything else on the water will find that the Freedom 215 can meet their expectations. With the Freedom 215 properly optioned, the whole family can enjoy this boat.

New Grady-White Freedom 215
“Wide Body” Roominess, Seating, and Impressive Performance
June 14, 2017
With the introduction of the 21-foot Freedom 215–the latest in their immensely popular dual console series–Grady-White has again applied the company's 40-plus year history of pioneering design, superb engineering and singular craftsmanship. This new Freedom 215 Grady-White aims squarely at a youthful-minded market of first- and second-time boat buyers, those seeking yacht tenders, and second-boat owners looking for a combination of innovative features, roominess, versatility, seaworthiness, and great performance in a compact premium dual console.
Grady-White Freedom 215Grady-White
Every new model design aspires to be an original. In the case of the Freedom 215, Grady-White establishes a level of luxury never before seen in a boat this size and category. That said, there are numerous elements throughout the 215 that were keyed directly from Grady’s much larger 33- and 37-foot Freedom models, including plush seating with extraordinarily detailed stitching, and indirect lighting features. For the boater looking for a high-end product in the 20- to 22-foot range, the 215 fills a void in the market and delivers a spirited and responsive ride.
Christian Carraway, Grady-White design engineer, comments, “The 19-degree progression of the running bottom on our Freedom 215 exclusive SeaV2® hull has a similar wave-cutting ‘vee’ at the bow area as that of our larger models. We engineered more aggressive angles in the ‘flare’ from stern to bow, confident that this would accomplish superior sea keeping and sports car-like action. The result is a 21-foot boat with a generously wide 8'6" beam and a more spacious cockpit more commonly found on boats 23 feet and up, that doesn’t compromise on performance and handling whether matched with a 200 HP or a 250 HP engine package. This design executes beautifully, with exciting get up and go!”
“The new transom swing-away port and starboard aft seat backrests aboard the 215 pivot out of the way for easy access to the swim and dockside boarding platforms–a first in the industry and a highlight of the boat’s versatile function,” raves Shelley Tubaugh, Grady-White vice president of marketing. “And there’s more innovation! The aft seats are deeply cushioned on their topsides, and are over two feet wide. We’re always looking at safety first, so the bottoms of these seat cushions are equipped with a rubber non-skid surface. Turn the non-skid side up for sure footing even for wet swimmers, snorkelers and waders. At the same time, you’ve securely stored and protected the cushion. Clever design! There’s nothing else like these ingenious features on the market.”
There’s more feature richness at the stern. The built-in swim platform extensions port and starboard are standard. The starboard platform features a sturdy, four-step swim ladder. The transom area, forward of the engine well, houses a 64-quart cooler (optional as a 16-gallon livewell), all ready for fishing or refreshments. For tow sport enthusiasts, there’s a super easy-to-use optional ski pylon that tucks quickly into the transom when you’re ready to cruise. A recessed freshwater cockpit shower plus a 10-gallon freshwater tank are an option. For fishermen and women, horizontal rod storage holders are under the gunwale, and four vertical rod holders are all standard. For swimming, diving, and tow sports, as well as fishing, the stern area of the Freedom 215 provide a new level of versatility and function in a boat in this size class.

At the helm and companion areas in the cockpit, the choices for standard seating are generously sized and truly comfortable, and options are available. Standard helm seating is a vertically and horizontally adjustable deluxe chair, which can be upgraded to either a Deluxe II chair with a taller back and flip-up arm rests, or a plush, ultra-cushioned contoured seat with flip-up bolster. Standard companion seating is your choice of a comfy sleeper seat with storage underneath, or a deluxe chair to match the standard helm seating. Grady-White’s patented lounge seat with sliding backrest is also available as an option for the companion area, as are seats matching either of the helm seating upgrade options.
The helm features a flush mount area for an electronics screen as big as 12 inches, and all boat system controls are logically and ergonomically arranged. There is a lockable starboard console compartment that includes tackle trays. Forward of the companion seating are the controls for the standard premium stereo, and plenty of storage areas, as well as a kid-friendly enclosed port side lockable head compartment. Nine super quality drink holders are strategically placed all around the boat.
The bow area provides comfortable cushioned seating with thick bolsters and backrests for as many as four or five adults. Two 56-quart insulated boxes are located under the bow seating. An available cushioned insert turns the entire bow into a sun platform. An easily accessible bow compartment houses a locker with plenty of room for anchor and rode.
The Freedom 215 is available in one of five hull gelcoat colors or two paint colors. Every Grady-White model features the remarkable performance of a SeaV2 hull that provides a softer, drier, more stable ride, meaning you can enjoy more days on the water more often.
