TEST ARTICLE FROM BOATS.COM:
"Some days, you just feel good for no reason. You wake up in the morning, and as you jump into the shower to start the day, you notice that you're humming a tune to yourself. You're happy.
The Crownline 270 BR was not created for such days. The 270 BR is meant for the days when you get out of bed, stub your toe on the way to the shower and spill coffee down the front of your favorite shirt — because this boat has the power to turn a bad day into a good one.
Of course, technically, you could still go out cruising aboard the 270 BR on one of those days that started out happy, but that is what's known as gilding the lily. There are sure to be federal laws against a person being so contented.
We tested the Crownline 270 BR during an ugly day on Southern California's Lake Castaic. The skies were overcast, temperatures were in the low 60s (Fahrenheit) and the water was very choppy. Autumn had arrived.
Just as we were feeling the emotional impact of the gray skies, though, we met up with the kindly crew of Bert's Mega Mall (located in Covina, California), who greeted us with smiles. The guys from Bert's were chomping at the bit to ride the 270 BR, because they had just taken delivery of the boat a few weeks prior to our test date and some of them hadn't yet had the opportunity to ride it. We were all excited about the ride to come.
Speed makes us happy
We had four adults and a little less than half a tank of fuel on board during our test. A 320 hp MX 6.2L MerCruiser MPI Bravo III stern drive powered our test boat.
The 270 BR went from 0 to plane in approximately 6 seconds. We hit plane at 3,200 rpm, giving us a cruising speed of 31.5 mph. Even with the heavy winds we faced that day, the boat hit a top speed of 50 mph at 5,000 rpm.
The most impressive part of the 270 BR's ride was how well it handled in turns. You have to fully turn the steering wheel a couple of times to get a tight turn, but that turn is incredibly tight.
"It thinks it's a 20-footer," said Wes Nays of Bert's Mega Mall. He's right. It does.
The boat tracked well, and it seemed solid during our jaunts across the occasional bit of wake we were able to find. Visibility was excellent, thanks to the adjustable helm seat that can be raised or lowered and has bolter seating.
The grand tour
The 270 gets an A+ for fit and finish. Everything on the boat is sparklingly clean and elegant. We haven't a single complaint.
The bow has a V-shaped settee that has three different configurations. You can either add the standard pedestal table, put in the optional bow filler cushions or just leave the space open. In addition to the stowage space located under the settee cushions, you'll also find the indispensable anchor and rope locker at the very tip of the bow.
Moving back through the curved, tinted walk-through windshield and the fully recessed bow walk-through doors, we found a generous head area built into the port console. The console is forward of the passenger seat, which is just like the captain's seat (including the bolster).
In addition to a portable toilet, the head compartment boasts a sink with cold fresh water and a vanity mirror. A small pocket designed to hold a roll of toilet paper is built into the sink's fiberglass console.
A screened portlight provides plenty of light and ventilation, but it receives backup support in the form of an electric light and an electric blower. Crownline has thrown in a carbon monoxide detector and a 12v receptacle, and there is a zippered pouch inside the door of the head compartment.
Back in the cockpit, faux burled wood accents decorate the helm. The bezeled stainless steel analog gauges from Faria and the various rocker switches have been laid out well, and Crownline has included another 12v receptacle. The built-in cup holder and standard AM/FM CD player are both within easy reach.
The 270 BR's designers managed to hide a large stowage area inside the helm console."
