Crazy Horse has just lived up to her Name.
We just surveyed and sea trialed her, and ALL was as perfect as perfect can be. The only issue was that this Thoroughbred galloped in total control much faster than the intended Buyer was able to handle and comprehend. There's Race Horses and then there's the Budweiser Clydesdales. You pick. Crazy Horse sailed at over 12 knots in total control effortlessly.
There are some old-fashioned terms hardly ever used nowadays, that describe the specific characteristics of boats. Among them are, “a fair turn of speed”, "sweet lines”; and weatherly," to which you can also add, "comfort under sail"; and "ideal short handed cruiser”.
Crazy Horse, as she's called, is a 1999 Sundeer 60. The last built by TPI in Rhode Island. Crazy Horse embodies all these characteristics; and more. An endearing quality under sail, typified by the chuckle of water at low speed; and a bone in her teeth at her fine bow when the wind picks up. It's a boat that quickens at each extra knot of wind; and when you couple that with an answer to the helm, that is as precise as the steering of a superb road car, you would just as soon sail Crazy Horse to Tahiti, as you would taking her across the Chesapeake Bay.
This is true Steve Dashew thinking, incorporated; and used by designers like Chuck Paine, with his Bermuda Series or Bob Perry, with his Starbucks and Icon series. The philosophy of Crazy Horse has been to create a boat that allows you go to sea, safely and efficiently; with a short handed crew.
Crazy Horse has a hull shape that is narrow and long on the waterline with buoyancy at both ends, a fine entry; and flat forefoot, which keeps the boat highly maneuverable, on or off wind conditions. This hull shape is easily driven and her sail plan much smaller. With her deep spade rudder, foil keel of lots of lead; all fuel and water tankage, with big heavy traction batteries low in the bilges, means Crazy Horse stands up straight and flies forward, while firing on all cylinders.
Built-in security on Crazy Horse, are fore and aft fully watertight bulkheads, with dedicated machinery areas. Construction is rock solid, with a massive glassed in grind system, which translates to zero flexing. This design is meant to voyage on in 100% total safety and comfort.
On deck, Crazy Horse is meant for couple cruising. With all lines that lead to the cockpit, for the furling jib and staysail, cruising chute; and mainsail winches. This 60 foot race horse is a breeze to venture far away; again, all with ease, safety and comfort.
She offers a new composite mast with a composite "park avenue" boom. Her hard forward watertight dodger and cockpit settees makes the miles fly by in absolute comfort. She has a new Northern Lights generator and new ac/heat units with diesel heat throughout. New hull paint, massive ground tackle, new ABI aluminum RBI with new outboard, top of the line sails; all in excellent condition and her running and standing rigging has always been renewed. Her electronics aboard are commercial top shelf grade. Everything anyone would ever want and ever need, is found on Crazy Horse.
Her interior is so well thought out and impressively comfortable, that a couple can truly enjoy; with plenty of natural light, handholds and storage. She has the largest and safest galley on any boat under 75 feet. Upper and lower sea berths aft, a full bathroom where one needs it; and hull windows to watch the fish and miles fly by. The huge master center line forward stateroom, is bigger and more comfortable; and as convenient as one would find in any of the world’s most expensive of hotel rooms.
It's all as close to perfection as perfection can ever get. Certainly one of the greatest offshore world voyagers ever created.

Speed & Distance
The Sundeer 60, Crazy Horse, is one of the best examples of a modern safe liveaboard cruising yacht that can be sailed by a couple. The accommodations both above and below deck make this vessel a superior choice. Few contemporary designs can compare to her fast passagemaking capability with long waterline, moderate displacement and very manageable sail plan.
From the steering station in the cockpit the Sundeer 60 gives impression of an easily managed 50-footer. With the security of the pilothouse you are secure in any condition. With her long shoal fin keel and spade rudder, she responds and tracks straight with power and confidence. She is designed to be manageable and safe for a cruising couple. Being safe and happy at sea requires accommodations that make everything as easy as possible.
The working jib is easy to tack and furl, and the loads involved in raising, trimming, and reefing sails are quite moderate with the convenience.
Upon entering the spacious interior of the Sundeer 60, the immediate impression is of open, well ventilated, space with lots of natural light. With 10 dorade vents and multiple deck hatches the space is airy and bright. The interior living space is entirely separated from the large machinery and mechanical systems locker aft separated from the living space with a water tight bulkhead. Up forward there is a huge locker where sails and gear are stowed. This forepeak storage also has a water tight bulkhead and a large hatch on deck to access the gear and the chain locker and windlass. In addition to making you feel really safe and protected, you also don’t have to work on the engine in your galley or schlep sails and gear through the boat or crawl on your bed to check the chain locker. Such is the wonder of a 60 feet cruising vessel.
With all of the well thoughtout attention to the sea going design necessities you will also find the interior very comfortable with excellent head room from 6 to 8 feet throughout the boat. The cherry interior joinery is beautiful and calming the deck hatches and ports provide a lot of light down below. The cabin sole is teak overlaid on marine plywood and very solid. All the lighting is LED for good power conservation. Of course there is air conditioning with reverse cycle heat as well as a Webasto diesel heater. All of the ship’s equipment is well installed and does not clutter the lovely interior.
Let’s walk through the vessel starting up forward with the owners’ master stateroom. It is quite large and located aft water tight bulkhead that separates the master cabin from the forepeak storage area and chain locker. There is a huge island queen berth with abundant personal storage space in drawers below the berth and in lockers and drawers outboard. The stateroom hosts a private head with shower.
Just aft the this spacious cabin is the main salon. Located amidships the salon is traditional yet spacious with incredible headroom. There are two settees that are seven foot long with storage under and outboard. Lee cloths on the settees make this a secure and comfortable sea berth. The traditional drop leaf dining table is wonderful with center storage. Overhead hatches and port lights make this space bright and airy.
The large navigation station and the ships office is to starboard with a very large chart table for working with ocean charts. All of the navigation and communication equipment is installed here as well as with displays in the cockpit. This is a real ships office as well as a nav station as the electrical panel is located here where it is easy to monitor all the systems on the boat.
The galley is adjacent the nav station with ample counter space and all the amenities. The signature deep cherry fiddles on the ample Corian counters tell you that this is an ocean going vessel. Nothing will slide off these counters. We will certainly talk more about the galley has it just might be the heart of the ship if not the stomach.
Continuing aft on the starboard side is a aft head located in the most stable part of the boat with easy access without going forward. This head has a Raritan electric toilet as well as the vanity and sink and also a stall shower! Just adjacent the head to port is the wonderful aft cabin with over and under berths equipped with lee cloths. There are also ample storage in lockers and under berth areas. The aft cabin well ventilated with an overhead hatch. This cabin is very, very comfortable in a seaway and during an ocean passage.
The engine and mechanic space is accessed from a water tight deck hatch and separated from the interior by the watertight bulkhead.
The premise behind the layout is that the large forward cabin is ideal in port, at anchor or and also quite comfortable sailing downwind which is what you do the most on a circumnavigation. Consistent with the design philosophy of comfortable cruising, there are two good sea-berths located in the cabin aft, and two settees in the salon amidships, all equipped with lee cloths. Also, the wide cockpit seats, sheltered by the fixed doghouse, make good sea berths and are handy in situations where the off-watch crew can remain on immediate call. True to the Dashew philosophy and drawn from all their experience, this design really works well for cruising.

The U shaped galley with counters on three sides provides excellent storage and is ideal for liveaboard and offshore cruising with good support between the inboard and outboard counters. The counter tops are high so there is no stooping even for tall sailors. There are deep fiddles and plenty of Corian covered horizontal space to work on. The fridge and freezer boxes are accessed through the forward counter hatches. The deep double sinks are on the center line, providing good drainage on either tack.
