- Contact your United Yacht broker to make arrangements to inspect boats that are of interest to you and meet your requirements. Be organized and take notes on the boats that are of particular interest to you.
- Determine your budget and, if you need financing, get approved from a credit agency early (your United Yacht broker can put you in touch with the appropriate companies that specialize in Yacht Finance). Then spend your time wisely looking at boats that fall within your price range.
- Rate boats on a scale of 1 to 10 for condition, suitability and equipment level. List equipment that you would like to add.
- Narrow the field to 2 or 3 and your United Yacht broker will research available sister ships for price comparisons and alternative offerings. Remember that although you cannot see every boat on the market, United Yacht Sales and their brokers have.
- Make an offer on your #1 choice and negotiate from a position of strength. All cash and keep the contract dates short. Your United Yacht broker will advise you in negotiating your best deal.
- Choose a surveyor with a reputation for being fair and thorough. Survey reports can read like a catalog of disasters but keep in mind that it is the surveyors job to find fault.
- Renegotiate the price if "major" defects are discovered.
- Buy it. Your United Yacht broker will advise you on documentation, crew, insurance, dockage and tax questions which will help you save time, money and protect your investment.
- Remember, this process is fun! Choosing and remaining loyal to a United Yacht broker will be extremely well rewarded with years of pleasurable yachting.
