ConstructionKey West avoids the use of wood in its boats, and feels confident enough in its construction methods and materials to include a 10-year hull warranty on all of its boats. After the gel coat goes on, a 20-mil. coat of vinylester resin-based SprayCore is sprayed on as an anti-blistering barrier. Next comes a 3-oz. layer of chop wet out in an ISO DCPD blend, followed by multidirectional 45/45 reinforcements. Six-in. fiberglass reinforcement strips are used in the sprayrails, followed by more reinforcements, including 24-oz. woven roving for strength, impact resistance and added bulk in the solid-glass bottom. Coremat is used in the hull sides over the chop to prevent print through. The transom is a composite of fiberglass and 1.5-in. high-density foam core. A one-piece fiberglass stringer grid supports the hull, and it s fully encapsulated with fiberglass covering the hull bottom and extending up past the chines. The stringer voids are injected with foam, as are all Key West s boats up to 29 feet this is an extra step taken by the builder that isn t required by U.S. Coast Guard regulations for boats 20 feet and larger. The one-piece cockpit liner is bonded to the hull stringers using 3M s 5200 urethane adhesive. The shoebox hull-to-deck joint is also bonded with 5200 and clamped in place with self-tapping screws. The 2020 WA is solidly built and should last a lifetime.Hull DesignThe Key West hull form was designed in-house.
