The concept of "Sunburst" was a "sailor's performance cruising catamaran" as compared to the charter cats commercially produced. I have been building boats, racing and cruising for fifty years and could not live with a boat that would not respond to the wind quickly. I wanted comfort but not lose the feel of an exciting boat. Nothing being manufactured fit this criteria so I spent seven years building "Sunburst". It is a comfortable cruising boat for sailors that don't mind wind in their hair and love to sail fast. After several years cruising in the Bahamas and sailing beach cats, I know that extreme shoal draft is not only a safety factor but adds to the fun of cruising. Even in the crowded North Channel, "Sunburst" can find secluded anchorages that no other power or sailboat can enter. A few times in severe conditions when anchoring was a problem, I simply put the boat on the beach.Speed is not only fun but significantly increases cruising range. Fully loaded with the hard dinghy and two sea kayaks on the aft tramp "Sunburst" has exceeded 20 knots and covered 100 miles in 7 hours with a crew of two. 90 Mile days or passing trawlers are normal events. I have sailed with 13 people aboard and still exceeded wind speed. The boat is easily singlehanded, even when racing, I've done it for 65 miles against fully crewed monos finishing just behind a couple 43' J boats. To windward 9 knots is about optimum. "Sunburst" has surprised many people with its windward ability and light wind speed. All of this with a boat offering separate cabins for two couples with queen size beds, refrigerator/freezer, H/C water, stove w/oven and below deck bicycle storage.
