The Ocean Alexander 540 Pilothouse is a longer 520 Pilothouse with a Euro Transom. Pilothouse models offer a low-level aft cockpit which allows easy access to the water through the wide transom door. The large flybridge can be reached either from the aft deck or from inside the pilothouse. There is ample space for dinghy stowage, which can be handled by crane. The standard interior layouts place the saloon and galley at the same level as the aft deck. The raised pilothouse is the command center of the yacht. With superb forward visibility, the captain can really feel in control of the ship. There is an angled console which can house enough electronics to satisfy a jet pilot. Doors are fitted to both sides, allowing direct access to side and foredecks. Cabin facilities are reached down a curving companionway. They comprise two equally large staterooms, with en suite head and stall shower.

Floors on the main deck of the yacht are satin finished teak and holly, while those in the staterooms are teak parquet.

SALON, Main Deck

The generously sized salon is entered from the cockpit via a door in the aft bulkhead. The salon is a warm, inviting area, featuring to port, a huge, comfortable U-shaped settee, upholstered in beige Ultraleather, and with a hydraulic teak hi-lo table at its center. To starboard is a large, built in love seat in matching Ultraleather facing the couch, completing a congenial conversation area. 

Housed in a teak cabinet aft of the love seat, the entertainment center includes a Sony TV with Sony satellite receiver and KVH Trac II antenna, Fusion 700 entertainment system, VCR, and DVD player. There is a JVC AM/FM with CD changer and Bose speakers. 

By day, huge windows port and starboard transform the salon into a bright cheery sun room. There are curtains and mini blinds for privacy, and by night, halogen overhead lighting provides full illumination, while romantic mood lighting is achieved with rope lights concealed behind the teak window valances. 

Climate control in the salon is excellent; a dedicated unit with its own SMX digital controls is concealed in the cabinet forward on the starboard side, and the salon also shares the galley unit. 

The open, bright spaciousness of the yacht is enhanced by the absence of full bulkheads from the windshield in the pilot house to the aft bulkhead in the salon. 

As throughout the vessel, impeccably crafted teak cabinets and paneling enhance the warmth of the salon, and complement the beautiful teak and holly sole.


GALLEY, Main Deck

The spacious galley is located amidships on the port side; forward of, and open to, the salon. It is highlighted by green marble counter tops and a black granite sole. Appliances include New Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer, Kenyon three burner electric cook top, and a New Sharp convection/microwave oven. There is ample storage space available in the numerous beautifully crafted teak cabinets and drawers throughout the galley. 

The galley has its own air conditioner with SMX digital control.


The roomy pilothouse, located just forward of the galley and up several steps, offers a panoramic view and seating for up to six people, in addition to the helmsman. To port is a large U-shaped settee upholstered in beige Ultraleather. Behind the helm, another large settee faces forward. There is a large L-shaped table for dining. A large ladderback helm seat with footrest provides the helmsman with a comfortable, commanding view. To starboard is a door to the deck, and a staircase to the flybridge. Hodge Podge's open floor plan affords the pilothouse helmsman a good, clear view of the transom while backing the yacht.

he helm console includes all electronics and controls necessary for running Hodge Podge, (Detailed list in Electronics and Navigation) as well as system monitoring equipment and a personal computer. Starboard of the helm console are the companionway stairs down to the lower deck and the staterooms. In the companionway are a locking cabinet for valuables, the laundry locker with a Splendide combo washer/dryer, and the yacht's electrical panel. The pilothouse also has its own air conditioning unit with SMX digital control.

MASTER STATEROOM, Amidships, Lower Deck

The huge, full beam master stateroom is located amidships, and is anchored by the athwartship island queen berth with drawers under. There are ample cabinets and built-in bookshelves, as well as a vanity with swing-out stool. The large hanging lockers are cedar lined and lighted. 

The master stateroom is cooled by its own air conditioner (one of five aboard) with SMX digital control. A concealed TV/VCR unit and JVC AM/FM stereo with CD changer provide entertainment, and the vessel's status can be monitored on the ST 60 Maxi unit, which displays wind speed/direction and water depth. Lighting is excellent, with both overhead halogen and floor lighting, as well as reading lights over the berth. 

The spacious master head is highlighted by green marble counter tops and a black granite floor. There is a large stall shower, Vacuflush toilet, ample lighting, GFCI outlets, and a vent fan. 

All cabinets and bulkheads are of impeccably crafted satin finish teak.

VIP STATEROOM, Forward, Lower deck

The commodious VIP stateroom is equal to the Master Stateroom, located in the bow, also features an island queen berth with ample walk around space. 

There is a vanity with mirror and swing out stool, as well lots of cabinet and drawer space throughout the cabin. As in the Master stateroom, the entire cabin is constructed of beautifully crafted teak, and is well lighted, with both overhead halogen lights and floor lighting. The ample, lighted hanging locker is cedar lined. 

The large head again features green marble counter tops and black granite floor. There is a large shower stall with glass bifold door. The head is a Sealand Vacuflush. Lighting is excellent and there are GFCI outlets. 

Climate control in the VIP stateroom is handled by its own air conditioner with SMX digital control. There is a TV/VCR unit in a cabinet, and music from the (NEW  12/6/2017 Fusion MS-UD650 Music/Weather.


The large flybridge, reached either via a Euro-style molded staircase from the cockpit; or, in inclement weather, via interior stairs from the pilothouse, features a 3/4 Isinglass enclosure (new 2006). Forward are helm and companion seats and immediately aft of these is an L-shaped settee with ample room for all the crew. There is ample storage inside the settee and under the instrument panel. 

Aft of the seating area is a large deck with space for the 10.5' Novurania RIB dinghy. The dinghy is powered by a NEW zero hours 20HP 2017 4 stroke Yamaha outboard, and a Quick Lift 800 Lb capacity davit makes an easy job of launching and retrieval. 


Hodge Poudg boasts two complete sets of top shelf electronics. Designed for self-sufficiency while cruising, Hodge Podge's electrical system includes several banks of batteries for reliable electrical service. The house service bank consists of four 8Ds, and there are separate batteries for engine and generator starting, as well as a bank of two 4Ds providing 24 volts for the bow thruster. The thruster battery bank has its own charger. All batteries are AGM deep cycle There is a New Xamtres inverter, and a Link 2000 power management board. 

The New in 2013 MDKBK/L/M/N Onan generator with 3,224 hrs. is more than adequate to handle all of the yacht's electrical load, including all five air conditioners (total 68,000 BTU) and to keep the various batteries charged. 

The 100 amp shore power cord is deployed and retrieved with a Glendinning Cablemaster (located in the aft lazarette). 

The electrical panel is located in the companionway stairwell between the pilothouse and lower deck.


Hodge Podge boasts a generous cockpit with ample room for line handling, fishing, swimming and relaxing. There is a large door through the Euro style transom leading out to the wide integral swim platform.

The teak aft decking was installed in 2013 and shows new. 

The spacious aft lazarette and engine room are accessed through a large hatch in the deck of the cockpit. The rudder posts and steering system are easily serviced in the lazarette. 

The wide, full length side decks have bulwarks and sturdy rails, making going forward at sea easy and safe. the side decks are accessed from the cockpit, and there is a door on the starboard side of the pilothouse. 

There is a fresh water washdown in the cockpit, and a newly changed fresh water washdown on the foredeck. The foredeck also boasts an ample and sturdy bow anchor platform with pulpit. There are two anchors: a stainless Danforth lunch hook, and a large overnight anchor. Other ground tackle includes an anchor ball (buoy) and a nylon snubber. The Maxwell 12 volt Model HW1200 windlass with foot controls was rebuilt in 2013 and easily handles all anchoring chores.


The well designed, sparkling engine room is reached from the same cockpit deck hatch as the lazarette. There is a sound-deadened waterproof door between the two, and the entire engine room is lined with lead/foam sound and heat insulation. 

Plenty of room is available, both outboard and inboard, around the 450 HP Cummins Diamond Series engines with Twin Disc gears. Room enough as well for the NEWLY installed Onan generator with sound shield, fuel and water tanks (all with sight gauges), all ship's batteries, and much of the vessel's plumbing systems, including the holding tank (plumbed for pump out and overboard discharge), toilet vacuum pump, shower sumps and pumps, and hot water heater (also connected to engine heat exchanger). 

Everything is easily accessible for servicing, and all plumbing/fuel/water lines are color coded for identification. 

Oil changes are facilitated by the oil change system, which services both engines and gears, as well as the generator. The Cummins are equipped with 1000 series Racor fuel filters/water strainers, and the generator has its own Racor as well. The shafts are fitted with NEW dripless shaft logs. 

Other equipment includes blowers, three Rule 2000 GPH bilge pumps, a manual bilge pump, bilge high water alarm, fresh water washdown, engine drip pans, and fiberglass mufflers. The engine room is also equipped with an automatic Halon fire extinguishing system.

There is an addition the stainless fuel tanks a 100 gallon bladder.


It would be difficult to find a yacht in this class anywhere that is prettier, cleaner, or priced better than Hodge Podge.
