1987 RANGER R-22 Sloop, This 22 Ranger is Clean and Fast. Her Owners New Boat has Arrived and this One Must Sell. A Gary Mull Design, she was engineered for Speed - Pure and Simple. Mull gave the Ranger 22 a lean, fine ended hull for speed to windward, with a flat run aft that helps her surf downwind. And he worked out a clever seven-eights rig that gives her a cloud of sail without a sky-high rating. To give the Ranger 22 a stiff, lightweight hull, she was stiffened with carbon fiber and a beefed-up cabin sole, designed as a structural part of the hull. And then there is the 22's extraordinary mast. Computer designed, it's cam-shaped, with special "turbulence generators" to give the mainsail added lift. The long cockpit is divided by the traveler - sail trimmers forward, helmsman aft - for maximum efficiency. Below deck the goal was saving weight. Simplicity is the rule.
