A boat show is a great place to shop for a new boat. You can compare a wide variety of boats, talk to the experts and best of all, take advantage of special show pricing, all at one time. With so much to see and shop, it helps to have a plan. Discover Boating, a national public awareness program to help people get on the water and explore boating, offers the following tips to make finding the boat of your dreams easier: 1. Use a boat show's show directory as a resource. It includes an alphabetical listing of exhibitors and their contact information, a listing of boats by category, helpful articles, and a show map. Take notes and keep track of who you've talked to in the directory. 2. Determine what type of boat you want. If you're not sure what type of boat will best meet your needs, visit DiscoverBoating.com before attending a boat show where you can use a helpful boat selector tool, figure out your budget with the affordability calculator and explore where you might go boating with our destinations and marinas and ramps section. Once you've narrowed your options, you'll be better prepared to compare brands and models at the show. 3. When at the show, visit every dealer who carries the type of boat you are looking for: a 15-20 minute session should be enough to get a good overview of what a dealer has to offer. While this may seem like overkill, you can learn a lot in a few minutes by talking to the brand representatives. And you'll feel more confident in your decision when you do find the boat you want. 4. Find a spot to review your notes and look at any brochures you have picked up. Narrow your options to the two or three boats you're most interested in. 5. Compare your choices: Revisit the dealers of the boats you're considering. Tell them you are planning to buy a boat and are looking at other similar boats. Ask each dealer about rebates, warranties, delivery dates, service and training. Compare the products and the deals you're offered. Before you make a final decision and sign the dotted line, walk away for a short time. 6. Once you know which boat you want, visit insurance companies and ask for a rate quote. Shop for a better financing offer at marine lenders and finance companies. If you'll need to store your boat, visit with local marinas and storage facilities. 7. You've thought it over, know the costs of insurance, financing and storage and are ready to buy. Go back to the dealer and sign the paperwork. Congratulations! You're a new boat owner.
